IADT Student Fashion Show – Orlando

Posted in Fashion with tags , , , , on October 28, 2009 by Editor

I had the pleasure to attend the 2009 IADT Student Fashion Show during Fashion Week at The Mall at Millenia, Orlando. Last year I caught the show as well and was mighty impressed so I was intrigued to attend again this year.

This year’s students did not disappoint. Six students were chosen to show their collections in this upper echelon shopping complex. Booming music, excellent emcee (Jayde from XL 106.7), upscale runway atmosphere….a professionally done event.

The students themselves were personable and fun but their work was creative, inspired and mostly…wearable! Any one of these collections I could choose a piece to dress my clients.

Congratulations to the student designers, to IADT staff and The Mall at Millenia for seeing the value in presenting local designers and giving them a springboard to show their talents. Kudos to all!

You’re an Idiot, Eat a Sandwich

Posted in Fashion on October 20, 2009 by Editor

What is the fashion world doing!?! Over the past month, there has been derogatory remarks made over anyone bigger than a size 4 which has caused a lot of controversy. Adding fuel to the fire, stylist Robert Verdi was interviewed and stated that food was for fat people and poor people. He also said skinny people don’t eat, they go shopping….but he likes fat people because they’re jolly. Huh? Say What?

I have come to the conclusion that the people making these comments must be starving themselves as well…and we all know what that does. No nutrition is getting to their brain, that must be why they are talking out their ass. Ok, I’m going to throw my stats in here just to prove a point. I am 5’7″, a size 10 on a good day, 12 if I’m bloated, I have curves and built like…a woman! Don’t you freakin’ tell me I’m fat, poor, worthless. I eat healthy, I exercise, I’m not poor, I have a wonderfully intelligent brain, I love you no matter what size you are, I am powerful. I will, however, tell you…….you’re doing a lot of harm spewing your nonsense to those who are impressionable and don’t know they are worth more than what it says on the scale.

I hope those with the nit wit quotes are just doing it for publicity, even though thats pretty low to sink. Other than that, you need some serious help.

Hungry people are angry and bitter ….you must be in need of a sandwich. Go eat, it does a body good.

Small Editor, Big Ego

Posted in Fashion, Image, Uncategorized with tags , , , on October 13, 2009 by Editor

In Florida, October is the month many events are planned for the mere fact the weather is to be a bit cooler and humidity is down, more people are willing to get dressed up and go out. Well, first off we are breaking records for high temps and heat indexes..truly hell. Secondly, there are many events that overlap or are set at queer times and/or venues.

In this economy, fighting for event attendance/charity donations you would think that they would go above and beyond to get you to their event. Here is what happened to me.

A certain event, headed up by a certain magazine had a benefit fashion show. I bought my ticket (since its for charity) and scheduled to attend. The day of the event…actually, the afternoon of the event, I was emailed a VIP invitation. I thought okay thats cool, so I followed the directions and immediately RSVP’d to reserve my seat. Moments later, I had a return email that stated the event was closed.

This pissed me off. Why would I be sent a VIP invite at 1:00pm, then be told at 1:10pm, the event was closed? Hmmmmm. Fishy. I refused to go. I had my ticket but the money was going to charity so I’m good with that, however, I’m not going to show support for a function driven by such idiocy.

Still pissed, the following day I emailed the editor and asked the same questions. I think that is bad measure for their image to do such a thing. My response….an auto reply that they are out of the office for the next few days. I bet they are! I’m sure I’m not the only one who received this invite.

Editors are amazingly self involved people. I know of another who puts herself in every social photo in her magazine. Are you promoting your magazine or yourself? We know you’re there if you publish a picture of the event….you’re annoying, so stay out of the way.

The fashion world is a small one and a hard one to deal with. The big egos involved are killer. Funny thing is, these editors have small magazines in a small city. They take themselves so seriously..and have an above it all attitude. You’re not on the same level as Anna Wintour of Vogue, you’re not a rocket scientist nor are you curing cancer so get over yourselves. If I didn’t love and have such a passion for fashion, I would run for the hills.

To date, the editor has never responded to my email. I doubt he ever will….that speaks volumes. Oh, note to self – cancel magazine subscription.

Rock on beautiful ones …

Ooh La La! Crazy Designers in Paris

Posted in Fashion with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 8, 2009 by Editor

I completely understand that creativity can be difficult when you’re under pressure to WOW people, do something different and sometimes extremely off -the-wall. Well, during Paris Fashion Week, there were some avant garde runway shows. A few of them that come to mind, were thought provoking if not just plain….goofy.

If the fashions weren’t silly, the show venue and decor was. Who would ever imagine walking into Chanel and being in the middle of country bumpkin road?! Karl Lagerfeld is a genius and harkened back to his boyhood of farm living. Not the elegant, chic image of Chanel, but definitely memorable. I’m just wondering what Coco would have thought. The fashions, however, were phenominal.

Ok, what about Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton? Jumbo afros and weird combinations of clothing and accessories. It made no sense…I guess that was the point. I just wonder what hallucinogen he was trippin’ on.

Ungaro…well, I think we all know their addition of LiLo turned them into a laughing stock. Bad move.

Onto better things…………….

Always impressive, Galliano for Dior – “Who doesn’t want to be buried in Dior?”..this is the new line spoken by many fashionistas, I’d be buried in anyone of his dresses.

Valentino…YSL…..Givenchy….Nina Ricci….been in love since I can remember. Fabulous were McQueen, JPG, Lanvin, Balenciaga, Balmain….so many I could go on for a month!!! Stella McCartney, BRAVO to you. Clothing that some real women could wear and great colors! Her choice of music was off the chain, loved it, but the change in music for the finale’ was dreammy. A song by her dad, Sir Paul McCartney, was a delishously heartwarming moment. Adore them both.

There were a bizzilion designers and shows in Paris, spectacular to be sure, but it would take me until F/W 2010 to write about them all.  I love this time of year..continual fashion weeks occuring everywhere, be it in big or small doses. Paris, definitely an overdose and I wouldn’t want it any other way!

Ab fab dressing to you. Be a beacon of style, shine proudly. XO

Shoes, Shoes, Shoes

Posted in Fashion on October 3, 2009 by Editor

When do you ever have enough shoes? NEVER! Styles change, colors change, seasons change, tastes change, moods change, marital status’ change (LOL)……so many reasons and a pretty shoe will stop me in my tracks. It’s a sickness that many of us have. Luckily, my mother adored shoes as well so she contributed to my shoe love affair. I remember when I was a kid, wearing new shoes out for the first time was such a high.

This euphoric feeling you get when you step into a fab pair of shoes can be compared to the first kiss with the guy of your dreams. A high heel, besides making you taller, changes your posture and lengthens the look of your leg….all positives.  I feel vampy in some of mine while there are others… I, along with Oprah, call “sittin’ shoes”.

These shoes are the most gorgeous and also the most treacherous to walk in. They felt great in the store but when I got them home…I just couldn’t navigate, but damn, they were devilishly sexy when I was sitting. “Sittin’ shoes” = short walking distance to your waiting chair -ie: table at restaurant, couch at the lounge, chair on the stage….

Shoes are necessary. You must wear shoes when leaving the house…they should go with your outfit….depending upon your career choice, they may need to be fabulous to protect your image ……. you need to feel good in them, not be ashamed but envied. Women love shoes and that is not going to change. That is why there are millions to choose from every season. Bless the shoe gods.
